Once your family decides to start ABA therapy, one of the first choices is where it will happen. Some children get ABA at home, some at a clinic, and many get a mix of both. There isn’t one right answer. The best setting depends on your child, their goals and your family’s routine.
Here is a plain-language look at both options to help you decide.
What is the difference?
ABA (applied behavior analysis) teaches skills like communication, play, daily routines and coping with change. It can also help reduce behaviors that get in the way of learning or safety. The teaching methods are the same in both settings. What changes is the environment.
- In-home ABA: A therapist comes to your home and works with your child in their everyday surroundings.
- Clinic-based ABA: Your child comes to a center designed for therapy, with planned activities and other children nearby.
In both settings at Evolve ABA Care, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designs and supervises your child’s program, and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works with your child during sessions. Parent training is part of the program either way.
The benefits of in-home ABA
Learning in real life
At home, your child practices skills where they will actually use them. A therapist can work on asking for a snack in your kitchen, getting dressed in their own room, or calming down during a real sibling squabble. Skills learned in the place they’re needed are often easier to keep using.
Help with family routines
If mornings, mealtimes, bath time or bedtime are hard, in-home sessions can target those moments directly. Your BCBA can see what really happens and suggest changes that fit your home.
More parent involvement
When sessions happen at home, parents and caregivers are often nearby. That makes it natural to watch, ask questions and practice strategies with support.
No commute
For many families, not having to drive to appointments makes therapy easier to keep up with, especially with younger children or siblings at home. Evolve ABA Care provides in-home ABA across the state of Texas, including Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and many more communities. See all areas we serve.
The benefits of clinic-based ABA
A setting built for learning
A clinic has the space, materials and structure for therapy. Fewer home distractions, like a favorite TV show or toy, can help some children focus.
Chances to be around other children
Clinics give children natural opportunities to practice social skills like sharing, taking turns, waiting and playing near or with other kids. These skills are harder to practice at home if no other children are around.
Getting ready for school
The routine of arriving, following a schedule, moving between activities and following group directions can help prepare a child for preschool or school.
More team support on site
At a clinic, the clinical team is close by during the day, which makes it easy for the supervising BCBA to observe and adjust the plan.
Our clinic in McKinney is at 1400 N Coit Rd, Suite 2506, McKinney, TX 75071.
Questions to help you choose
Every child is different. These questions can help you think it through:
- What are your child’s main goals? If the biggest challenges happen at home, like sleep, mealtimes, toileting or tantrums during routines, in-home ABA may be a good fit. If the focus is on social skills with peers or school readiness, a clinic may offer more.
- How does your child handle new places? Some children do best starting in a familiar setting. Others enjoy the variety of a clinic.
- What does your schedule look like? Think about work, school pickup, siblings and driving time.
- Is there a quiet space at home? In-home sessions work best with a space where your child and therapist can focus.
- Where do you live? Clinic-based ABA works best for families within a reasonable drive of McKinney. Families elsewhere in Texas can choose in-home ABA.
- What does your insurance cover? Coverage for each setting depends on your plan and your child’s treatment plan.
You don’t have to choose just one
Many children benefit from a combination. For example, a child might attend the clinic for social and school-readiness goals, and also have in-home sessions focused on family routines. Your child’s setting can also change over time as their needs change. Your BCBA will talk with you about what makes sense and revisit it as your child grows.
Insurance and getting started
Evolve ABA Care accepts Texas Medicaid, UnitedHealthcare, BCBS, Baylor Scott & White, Aetna, Cigna, Wellpoint and Molina. Coverage and approved hours depend on your child’s plan and assessment, so we verify your benefits before services begin. We also have a Spanish-speaking (bilingual) BCBA.
Frequently asked questions
Is in-home ABA as effective as clinic-based ABA?
Both settings use the same ABA methods. The right setting depends on your child’s goals and needs. Your BCBA will recommend what fits your child best.
Do I need to be home during in-home sessions?
A parent or caregiver usually needs to be at home during in-home sessions. Your BCBA will explain how this works for your family.
Can my child switch between in-home and clinic-based ABA?
Often, yes. Settings can change as your child’s needs change, depending on the treatment plan, insurance and availability.
Do you offer in-home ABA outside the Dallas area?
Yes. Evolve ABA Care offers in-home ABA across the state of Texas. Clinic-based ABA is at our McKinney location.
